THE IMPACT OF UMURENGE SACCO ON POVERTY ALLEVIATION THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Description
This study investigates the impact of Umurenge SACCO on poverty alleviation through entrepreneurship in Rwanda, employing a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were gathered via surveys from 150 SACCO members, while qualitative insights were obtained from interviews with 25 stakeholders. Statistical analyses revealed significant findings: SACCO-funded businesses led to a 60% increase in average monthly income (from RWF 20,000 in 2011 to RWF 60,000 in 2015) and a 5.4% annual reduction in poverty rates, with a total decline from 45% to 18%. A chi-square test (χ² = 128.3, p < 0.001) highlighted targeted sectoral loan allocations, while a paired sample t-test (t(4) = -8.97, p < 0.001) confirmed poverty reduction. Entrepreneurial training was crucial, significantly improving business survival rates (F(4,45) = 25.76, p < 0.001). Gender inclusivity also improved, with female beneficiaries surpassing males by 2015 (U = 0, p < 0.05). The study concludes that Umurenge SACCO fosters sustainable entrepreneurship, reducing poverty and promoting equitable development. Recommendations include enhancing entrepreneurial training, expanding credit access, and fostering public-private partnerships.
