Dataset supporting the implementation of workflows for Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) at a European scale

1. Results of surveys of monitoring techniques 

We present two files containing the results of the online surveys on monitoring techniques conducted during the EuropaBON stakeholder workshop on freshwater, marine, and terrestrial EBV workflows, held on 22-24 February 2023 (Lumbierres and Kissling, 2023). The surveys assessed the relevance of six monitoring techniques for collecting data for each of the 70 EBVs identified by EuropaBON (Junker et al., 2023). The six monitoring techniques evaluated were: structured in-situ monitoring, citizen-science observations, DNA-based methods, digital sensors, satellite remote sensing, and aerial remote sensing. Respondents indicated the importance of each technique for every EBV using one of four responses:  "yes", "partially", "no", or "I don't know."

2. Results of the list of all requirements and needs and emerging tools and projects identified by participants during the stakeholder workshop, classified into harmonised categories

We present two additional files containing information on the requirements and needs, as well as emerging tools and projects, identified during the EuropaBON stakeholder workshop on freshwater, marine, and terrestrial EBV workflows, held on 22-24 February 2023 (Lumbierres and Kissling, 2023). Workshop participants were asked to list "Emerging tools and projects" referring to tools and EU projects currently under development but not yet operational for regulatory reporting, and "Requirements and needs" outlining future needs for the operationalisation of EBV workflows for each of the 70 identified EBVs. The data was collected across the three main workflow components: data collection, data integration, and modelling. After the workshop, the collected inputs were systematically categorized into harmonised categories for consistency and clarity.

The provided files include tables where columns represent individual EBVs, and rows represent harmonised categories. For each EBV, the corresponding requirements and needs, as well as the emerging tools and projects identified by participants, are assigned to the appropriate harmonised category.
