Towards an integrated data-driven infrastructure (InfraNor)

Description

This is chapter 11 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2024 (https://sios-svalbard.org/SESS_Issue7).

The InfraNor project illustrates the importance of the national investments in research infrastructure, in Svalbard and its surrounding oceans, including a coherent data management system. It constitutes the Norwegian contribution to SIOS for the benefit of its members and their communities.

It tallies 42 items (infrastructures and space-related activities/products) already implemented or soon to be fully implemented under the responsibility of 14 Norwegian research institutions. Emphasis is on upgrading existing and establishing new infrastructure to produce a more coherent dataset among sites with similar instruments to help to address Earth System Science questions related to Global Change.

InfraNor focuses also on developing new technology that will reduce the footprint of future scientific activities in Svalbard, e.g., by deploying instrument pods aboard commercial airliners in regular traffic to map ocean characteristics.
