Accelerated cold-start phase through exothermic dilution reaction for alkaline electrolysis – A model-based approach

This poster contribution focuses on a concept for accelerated cold start for alkaline electrolysis via the exothermic dilution reaction of potassium hydroxide solution with water, which was already presented in a previous poster contribution.
As part of this conference contribution, the existing concept will be further developed and tested at model level over a longer period of time. For this purpose, the model was expanded on a physical and thermal level, for example to be able to show the cooling behaviour of the system during switch-off times. In addition, a heat recovery system and a hot water tank were integrated to increase the water temperature for dilution. Furthermore, the peripherals such as pumps are better described to show the influence of the change in concentration, e.g. on the power consumption of the pumps. Various simulation scenarios will be used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed system in comparison to conventional alkaline electrolysers.
