Dagstuhl Publishing: FAIR Supplementary Materials from a Publisher's Perspective
Description
This publication provides an overview of Dagstuhl Publishing's approach to integrating supplementary materials into its scientific publishing workflow. It outlines the processes for submitting, curating and archiving supplementary materials such as software and datasets. The workflows are designed according to the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) to ensure that the materials are discoverable and reusable by the research community.
Dagstuhl Publishing operates two core services to support these processes:
- Dagstuhl Research Online Publication Server (DROPS): A digital publishing service that provides open access to published research materials, including now supplementary content, enabling researchers to share their work widely and securely.
- Dagstuhl Submission Server (DSUB): A comprehensive submission platform for authors to upload articles and supplementary materials, now expanded to include software and datasets.
The key components of the supplementary materials processes include:
- Basic metadata form: Authors provide essential details about the supplementary material, including classification using the DataCite vocabulary and repository links.
- Extended metadata form: Additional metadata can be added, including author details, project names and detailed descriptions. Integration with GitHub allows automated metadata import for easy use.
- Curation and review: A dedicated team reviews and curates metadata to ensure completeness, accuracy and standardisation.
- Publication and long-term preservation: Supplementary material will be published on DROPS and optionally archived with Software Heritage for long-term accessibility.
Both DROPS and DSUB are an integral part of Dagstuhl's mission to support transparency and reproducibility in computer science research. By providing these services, Dagstuhl Publishing ensures the long-term preservation of valuable digital artefacts while promoting Open Science and FAIR practices.
