Description

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasing role in education. Npuls’ new vision statement on “AI and Equity” explains how using AI can help make opportunities fairer for all students and the risks involved in The Netherlands. The vision contains a practical guide for Dutch educational institutions to use AI properly and responsibly. A team of writers from secondary and tertiary education created the document. They did a literature review, talked to experts and got ideas from colleagues in the field. This provided many new insights. The entire vision is written in simple language.

AI offers many opportunities for education but also comes with risks. Biases in data, for example, can result in unequal outcomes for groups of students. The aim is to use this technology in a way that actively contributes to increasing opportunities for everyone.

The vision includes practical steps and tips for Dutch educational institutions to use AI carefully and fairly. These include recognizing biases in data, using transparent algorithms, and the vital role of teachers in decisions. With careful use of AI, educational institutions can create a safe and fair learning environment where every student can develop well.
