Digital Inclusion in Rural Communities: Lessons from FUTURAL

This publication, Digital Inclusion in Rural Communities: Lessons from FUTURAL, serves as a thought leadership paper and research-focused exploration of the FUTURAL project, funded under the Horizon Europe framework. It examines the strategies, challenges, and preliminary outcomes of the project in addressing the digital divide in rural Europe. The paper delves into how FUTURAL’s innovative Smart Solutions, participatory co-creation methodologies, and capacity-building programs are driving digital inclusion, sustainability, and empowerment in rural areas. Through six Multi-Actor Pilots across Europe, FUTURAL demonstrates the transformative potential of tailored digital tools in areas including citizen engagement and resource management. The project highlights key lessons on tailoring solutions to local contexts, fostering collaboration, and addressing systemic barriers. The publication also examines FUTURAL’s anticipated policy impacts, including its role in shaping governance frameworks and policy recommendations that align with EU priorities like the European Green Deal and the Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas. The findings showcase FUTURAL’s scalable approach to bridging the digital divide and empowering rural communities to thrive in an evolving digital landscape.
