Data Study Group Final Report: Theyr - Using Explainable AI to Improve User Trust and Adoption in Maritime Routing

Authors/Creators

Description

Data Study Groups are week-long events at The Alan Turing Institute bringing together some of the country’s top talent from data science, artificial intelligence, and wider fields, to analyse real-world data science challenges.

In this DSG, Theyr, a commercial shipping voyage optimisation provider presented a challenge on trust and explainability of AI. Their product provides optimised voyage routes for ships to save fuel and time, but ship captains may decide not to follow the routes because they do not understand why the software chose a specific route. The aim of the challenge is to investigate how to interpret the decisions made by the software, and how to communicate that information to an end-user.
