Advancing Semantic Interoperability: A Practical Workshop on DMPonline's Contributions and Collaborative Future

  • 1. ROR icon Digital Curation Centre
  • 2. Digital Curation Centre (DCC)
  • 3. The University of Edinburgh

Description

Workshop Description:

Topic: We discussed semantic interoperability at both domain-specific and application-wide levels, focusing on how DMPonline has pioneered enhancements and integrations that promote seamless data exchange and usage across diverse research contexts.

  • By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

    • Define interoperability and explain its importance in the context of research data.

    • Define and give examples of the main types of interoperability: legal, organizational, technical, and semantic.

    • Explain the core components of semantic interoperability, including metadata schemas, ontologies, and data standards.

    • Examine how semantic interoperability and data mapping work within DMPonline to facilitate effective data management planning.

Format:

  • Part 1: Introduction to Digital Curation Centre (DCC), DMPonline, Interoperability and why it matters.

  • Part 2: Dwelling into Semantic Interoperability pillars:

      • Interoperability Types & Framework
      • Metadata and Annotations (e.g. taxonomy)
      • Shared Ontologies (e.g. thesauri)
      • Data Standards and Protocols

  • Part 3: Advancing semantics interoperability in DMPonline
      • Practical examples of semantics interoperability in DMPonline
        • RDA metada standards
        • OECD taxonomy for research domain field
        • RE3DATA registry for list of repositories
        • RDA metadata standards catalog - for metadata selection
        • SPDX license registry - for selecting an appropriate license
        • Export in csv, html, pdf, text, docs, Json
        • Shibboleth credentials can be synced
        • ORCiD
        • DMPonline api v0 & v1 (Complies with the RDA Common Standard Metadata schema v1.0.)

Target Audience:

  • Data Managers and IT Professionals are pivotal in implementing and managing data infrastructures.

  • Researchers need to understand how semantic interoperability can enhance the accessibility and utility of their data.

  • Policymakers and institutional leaders evaluate data management practices and look for effective ways to implement FAIR principles more broadly.

  • Developers and system integrators are interested in the technical challenges and solutions associated with developing interoperable systems.

Summary:

Join us to understand better how DMPonline's developments in semantics interoperability are improving data management and use across various domains. We invite you to contribute your experiences and ideas to what promises to be a highly interactive and outcome-focused workshop that will drive the agenda on semantic interoperability and machine-actionable capabilities in data management. This session is crucial for anyone involved in or affected by metadata management at an operational or strategic level, offering practical insights and forward-looking discussions.
