An updated 3D map of the solar neighbourhood using OB stars and Gaia DR3

Description

In the ongoing astronomical revolution brought by the Gaia mission, our view of the Galaxy and its history is changing at rates never seen before. We are starting to realise the convoluted intricacies of the solar neighbourhood in the young stellar component, while witnessing previously well established stellar structures being called into question. Here we present the most comprehensive 3D map of the ~ 5 kpc solar neighbourhood, using an updated version of the ALS catalogue [ALS III] of young massive stars, now including some ~23 000 objects, integrating new data from the Galactic O-star Catalogue (GOSC), the Galactic Wolf Rayet Catalogue and all known Galactic HMXBs. Since Gaia DR3 we have been working on improving the astrometric and photometric calibrations of the data, while developing a Bayesian framework for reliable distance estimation. These improved standards have allowed our team to trace the spiral arm structure in our vicinity, uncovering the Cepheus spur (with evidence for a possible corrugation pattern in the Galactic disk), extending the Sagittarius spur, and fueling the debate about the existence of the Gould Belt and the Radcliffe wave. We are also integrating information about group membership from the Villafranca Catalogue of O-type stellar groups. Correlating the massive OB star distribution with the 3D dust distribution (which has recently improved significantly) brings valuable information about feedback and the overall evolution of our stellar vicinity (with hints about the spiral arm formation mechanisms operating in the Milky Way). Using the ALS III catalogue, we are also venturing into the realm of Galactic rotation curves, from the point of view of OB stars, and the search for non-axisymmetric residuals in the velocity field of the disk, which might relate to the arms. As a side effect of this kinematical analysis we are building a catalogue of new massive runaway stars.
