Description
This dataset comprises over 150 pitfall trap samples collected from June to December 2023 at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Farm. These samples were gathered by students and technicians from the Plant-Insect Ecology and Evolution (PIEE) Lab as part of a larger project investigating the effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on flying insects and ground-dwelling arthropods. They were collected under three different lighting conditions (white, amber, and control/darkness). Each filename encodes information about the sample as follows: [starting date of 5-day collection period]_[site number]_[amber, white, or control (off) light]_[direction sticky card is facing]. Pitfall trap samples were scanned using an EPSON Perfection V600 Scanner by PIEE Lab students and technicians.
Each insect is annotated as a polygon.
Annotations are contained, as polygons in COCO format, in `instances_default.json`.
Images were annotated by hand or semi-automatically (e.g., using Segment Anything).
