Description

Description of the methodology needed to investigate collection histories by studying collectors of specimens from Cayman Islands and Montserrat using GBIF and Wikidata.

This record is an appendix to a journal article under submission entitled: "Capacity building needed to reap the benefits of access to biodiversity collections". The pdf in this record contains the approach that (1) extracts collectors’ names from GBIF, (2) disambiguates the name strings to Wikidata items and (3) analyses the data available on Wikidata using SPARQL queries, including the creation of maps and other graphics; as well as the disambiguated Q-IDs for collectors from Montserrat and Cayman Islands, and the graphics resulting from the SPARQL queries.
