Description

This paper addresses the long-standing disparities in health outcomes and access to healthcare experienced by ethnic minority groups in the UK. It highlights the challenges posed by the inconsistent collection and quality of ethnicity data, which became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper presents key findings from the UK Health Data Research Alliance's Special Interest Group on Ethnicity Data Coding Standards, formed to address concerns about poor data quality. It offers recommendations to improve the consistency, transparency, and standardisation of ethnicity data collection across health and social care. The goal is to enhance data accuracy and completeness to better understand and address ethnic inequalities in healthcare.
