PECULIARITIES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHURCH LAND OWNERSHIP IN RUSSIA IN THE XVIII-SECOND HALF OF THE XIX-TH CENTURY
Authors/Creators
Description
The article deals with the peculiarities of vesting churches and monasteries with land plots in the XVIII-th - second half of the XIX-th century. It is shown that the reforms were very unfavorable for monasteries, bishops' houses and some cathedrals. However, the introduction of staff positions benefited parish churches, as they had little income from land. Despite the harsh church policy in the XVIII-th and second half of the XIX-th century, the government still sought to improve the situation of parish priests. Almost all draught taxes were abolished, and corporal punishment of priests and deacons was abolished. They were allowed to use the forests of private owners, but their sale was prohibited. Also priests were allocated land plots over 35 dessiatinas.
