Les poissons de l'Igue du Gral

  • 1. Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève (MHNG)

Description

Fishes of the Igue du Gral.- Two small fish vertebrae were discovered at the base of the fill of the Gral paleontological site, in layers 5+6 dated between 26 000 and 36 000 calBP. Only one of them has been identified ; it belongs to the European grayling Thymallus thymallus. The taphonomic study showed traces of digestion on the angular edges of the vertebrae, suggesting that this surprising discovery is attributable to a predator, probably a bird. A final analysis compares the species present in the same levels, and their food habits, to identify the species likely to be responsible for the introduction of fish into the pit.
