Sikerek és kudarcok, várakozások és tapasztalások (Successes and failures, expectations and experiences)

Mire a kommunizmus összeomlott, az addig helyünkként tudott Nyugat megváltozott, s belső hasadtságok folytán a belső fejlődés is csak felemásan szakadt el a múlttól. Negyedik mandátumát élve a jelen kormányerő sikerrel járt el abban, hogy egy működőképes országot intézményileg felépítsen s az időközben zajló globális és európai irányvesztéstől megvédjen. Kül- és belhoni szabadságharcát úgyszólván kivételtelenül kormányzati eszközökkel vívta eddig meg, hiszen kulturálisan — szellemileg és érzelmileg, vagyis az ország tudományos és művészeti potenciáljának a felhasználásával — e haza felépítésébe még úgyszólván bele sem kezdett. Már pedig az időben történő cselekvés elmulasztása nemcsak önmagában veszélyforrás, de könnyen bizonyulhat egy megfordíthatatlanul előrehaladó folyamat szabadjára engedésének is.

By the time communism collapsed, the West, which we had known as our place, had changed, and the internal divisions in our countryʼs development meant that development within the country was only half-detached from the past. In its fourth mandate, the present government has succeeded in building a country functioning institutionally and protecting it from the global and European dislocation that has taken place in the meantime. Its struggle for freedom at home and abroad has so far been fought almost without exception by governmental means, since culturally—intellectually and emotionally, that is to say, by using the countryʼs scientific and artistic potential—it has not even begun to build this country. Failure to act in good time is not only dangerous in itself, but could easily prove to be the unleashing of a process that is irreversibly moving forward.
