Another twisted malacological riddle: Chauvetia elongata Nordsieck & García-Talavera, 1979 (Gastropoda, Buccinoidea, Chauvetiidae)

Description

The original description of the taxon Chauvetia elongata Nordsieck & García-Talavera, 1979 lacks many distinguishing features, with few not accurate or vague data. Herein, the true identity of this taxon is established with a re-description of the species, and with the designation of a neotype to stabilize the nomenclature. The type material of Pleurotoma pellisphocae Reeve, 1845 and Lachesis retifera Brugnone, 1880, is figured. These two names were wrongly used to denote C. elongata, as misidentifications by several European authors. For all these taxa, a critical historical review is provided.
