Description

Cocconeis latecostata Hustedt (1955: 16) (Fig. 22)

References: Hustedt 1955, p. 16, pl. 5, figs 1–3; Witkowski et al. 2000, p. 110, pl. 33, figs 10–12.

Features: Length 18–24 μm, width 12–16 μm, marginal transapical striae on sternum valve 7–8 in 10 μm, inner striae on both sides of the sternum 28–30 in 10 μm.

Description: Sternum valve elliptical with broadly rounded apices. Sternum wide, lanceolate with irregularly dispersed areolae. Valve margin costate.

Remarks: Only sternum valves were observed with valves slightly wider than that reported by Hustedt (1955) and having shorter marginal striae.

Ecology and Distribution: C. latecostata is a marine species rarely reported in the literature and seems to have limited distribution, originally described from the coasts of California, the United States (Husted 1955). Previously reported from the Gulf (Al-Yamani & Saburova 2011). Rare in Basra corals.
