Description

Celastrilex Doweld, gen. nov.

Description:—Leaves petiolate, ovate-elliptical, abruptly rounded to the decurrent base and narrowed to a pointed apex; margins entire, or along the sides provided with minute, sharp, upward-pointing teeth. Midrib slender and straight, with 6–7 to 9 pairs of thin, opposite or alternate secondaries, which arise at an angle of about 40°, much curved upward and apparently arch around just inside the margin. Veinlets very fine, mainly simple, oblique to the secondaries.

Type:— Celastrilex artocarpidioides (Lesquereux) Doweld, comb. nov.

Stratigraphy:—Palaeocene.

Etymology:—Combination of two bases of extant generic names, Celastrus Linnaeus (1753: 196) and Ilex (1753: 125).
