Description
Cheilanthes pilosa Goldm., Nova Acta 19, Suppl. I, 455. 1843.
Range: —Central Peru to Bolivia (CH, CO, LP, SC) and central Argentina.
Ecology: —Common; saxicolous in cliffs and rock crevices in semihumid habitats; 2200–4650 m.
Notes: —Leaves small, to 25(40) cm long, blades 2-to 3-pinnate; rachises and segments with long, segmented, gland-tipped hairs; rhizome scales shining, rigid, dark brown. In Bolivia, there is great variation in this relatively common species. Fay & Fay 2844 (UC) is very hairy, the hairs nearly obscuring the abaxial lamina; it is also quite large, ca. 8 cm wide. The hairs are contorted, long (to 1 mm), and not appressed. The species as here construed is quite likely a complex needing further study to delimit the species. Possibly related to Cheilanthes juergensii Rosenst., from southern Brazil.
