Description
35. Crotalaria quinquefolia Linnaeus (1753: 716). Type:— INDIA. Linnean Herbarium 895/38 (LINN microfiche).
Herb, erect, 0.7–1.5 m high; young branches angular, white pubescent. Leaves digitately (4–)5-foliolate. Stipules narrowly linear, 2–4 mm long, persistent. Petioles 1.5–5.7 cm long, brown pubescent. Petiolules 0.2–1 mm long. Leaflets oblong or oblanceolate, 1.3–9 × 0.3–1.5 cm, base cuneate, apex obtuse or emarginate, margin entire, glabrous upper, silvery pubescent lower; lateral veins 4–10 pairs, inconspicuous. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, open racemes, 4–22 cm long; peduncle 2–10 cm long, silvery pubescent. Bracts deflexed, lanceolate, 8–1.2 × 1.8–2 mm, persistent. Pedicels 7–10 mm long, glabrous. Bracteoles inserted on the pedicel, narrowly linear, 0.5–2 mm long, persistent. Calyx 9–11 mm long, campanulate, bilabiate; tube 5–6 mm long; lobes triangular, 4–5 mm long, glabrous inside, silvery pubescent outside. Corolla yellow. Standard: claw 2–3 mm long, white tomentose above and along the margin, glabrous below; blade obovate, 14–15 × 15–17 mm, base cuneate, apex rounded, margin glabrous. Wings: claw 5–6 mm long, white tomentose at the apex above, glabrous below, margin white puberulous; blade elliptic or ovate, 12–14 × 9.5–10 mm, base oblique, apex obtuse, margin glabrous. Keel: claw 4.5–5 mm long, white tomentose above and along the margin, glabrous below; blade ovate, 10–11 × 8–8.5 mm, beak spirally twisted, base oblique white tomentose, apex attenuate, margin white puberulous. Stamens: filaments fused for proximal 10–13 mm, free for distal 5–8 mm; anthers either narrowly linear, 2–2.5 mm long or oblong, 0.8–1 mm long. Ovary with 3–3.5 mm long stipe, oblong, 6.5–7 mm long, glabrous; style 12–13 mm long, white pubescent in two lines along the distal edge. Pods with 7–10 mm long stipe, oblong, 4.7–5.5 × 1.5–2 cm, brown, glabrous. Seeds reniform, 4–5 × 3–3.5 mm, brown.

Notes: — Crotalaria quinquefolia is characterized by its oblong or oblanceolate leaflets, lanceolate deflexed bracts, the beak of its keel which is spirally twisted and the glabrous pods.
