Description

6. Crotalaria bracteata Roxburgh ex Candolle (1825: 130). Type:— INDIA. 18 September 1815, Wallich 985 (holotype G00457902! seen on image). (Figure 30E).

Herb, erect, 0.5–1 m high; young branches terete, brown tomentose. Leaves digitately 3-foliolate. Stipules narrowly linear, ca. 1 mm long, brown pubescent, caducous. Petioles 2.5–5.7 cm long, brown pubescent. Petiolules 1–3 mm long. Leaflets elliptic or obovate, 5–10 × 3–4.5 cm, base cuneate, apex acute or emarginate, margin entire, glabrous upper, white puberulous lower; lateral veins 6–10 pairs. Inflorescences leaf-opposed, open racemes, 5.5–9.5 cm long; peduncle 0.7–2 cm long, brown pubescent. Bracts narrowly linear, 1.3–2 mm long, persistent. Pedicels 2–5 mm long, brown pubescent. Bracteoles inserted on the calyx tube, ovate, 3–3.5 × 1–1.5 mm, persistent. Calyx 3–5 mm long, truncate; tube 1.5–2 mm long; lobes subequal, triangular, 1.5–3 mm long, glabrous inside, white puberulous outside. Corolla yellow (sometimes reddish-yellow). Standard: claw 1.8–2 mm long, glabrous, apex with appendages, margin white pubescent; blade broadly ovate, 8–10 × 7–8 mm, base rounded, apex acute, margin glabrous. Wings: claw 1–2 mm long, glabrous; blade oblong, 7–8 × 3–3.5 mm, base oblique, apex acute, margin glabrous. Keel: claw 1.8–2 mm long, glabrous except margin white pubescent; blade ovate, 11–12 × 4–5 mm, beak not twisted, base cuneate, apex attenuate, margin white puberulous. Stamens: filaments fused for proximal 5–6 mm, free for distal 5–6 mm; anthers either narrowly linear, 1–1.5 mm long or oblong, 0.2–0.3 mm long. Ovary with 0.8–1 mm long stipe, oblong, 2–3 mm long, white tomentose; style 11–12 mm long, adaxially white pubescent at the base and along a single line on the distal edge, abaxially glabrous. Pods with 1.5–2 mm long stipe, elliptic, 1.2–2 × 0.6–0.8 cm, brown, white tomentose. Seeds reniform, 3–3.2 × 2.8–3 mm, yellow-brown.

Distribution: —Asia (China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam). (Figure 5).

Ecology: —Open areas in deciduous dipterocarp, mixed deciduous and dry evergreen forests with bamboo dominance, elevation 65–1300 m.

Notes: —The diagnostic characters of C. bracteata are the white tomentose pods, leaf-opposed inflorescences and glabrous or sparely puberulous leaves.
