Description

1. Cleomella angustifolia Torrey (1850: 255)

Lectotype (designated here): U.S. Dragon Expedition [referred to by Torrey (1850) as on the Upper Plate], Beyrich s.n. (NY 02256363!).

Note: The original description of Cleomella angustifolia referenced four specimens: “Western Arkansas, Dr. James. On the Upper Patte, Mr. Beyrich. San Felipe, Texas, Drummond. High Praries west of Houston, Lindheimer.” (Torrey 1850: 255). Three of these are labelled “Torrey Herbarium” (NY), with the Drummond and Beyrich collections together on one sheet, and the Lindheimer collection is labeled “Meisner Herbarium” (NY). The collection of Dr. James was the first of this species seen by Torrey, though originally referred to as C. mexicana DC. (Torrey 1828). However, of the material used in the original description, it is not the best representative of the species. The Beyrich, Drummond, and Lindheimer collections are more complete, though the Beyrich specimen has the best collection of leaves, flowers, and fruits with obvious seeds inside. The James, Beyrich, and Drummond specimens also all have annotations in John Torrey’s hand as Cleomella angustifolia. For these reasons we are here designating the Beyrich collection as the lectotype of Cleomella angustifolia.
