Description
Herrera acclivis (Sanborn, 2017b) new combination
Carineta acclivis Sanborn 2017b: 630 (Morne Bellevue, Le Marugot, 630 m, Martinique).
Remarks. The head is wider than the mesonotum and wider than the lateral pronotum and the pronotum has approximate parallel sides in this species so it is being reassigned to the genus Herrera to become Herrera acclivis (Sanborn, 2017b) n. comb. There have been numerous generic reassignments from Carineta to Herrera recently as species have been investigated further and the differences in the genera become more apparent (e.g., Sanborn 2019a). The two genera are in need of revision in order to provide details to distinguish the genera more easily.
Diagnosis. This is the largest of the three Martinique species of Herrera with body lengths greater than 21.5 mm and fore wing length greater than 27 mm. It can also be distinguished by the extensive piceous, castaneous, and tawny markings on the pronotum and mesothorax not found in Herrera martiniquensis n. comb. or Herrera castaneanigricula n. sp. The body length also quickly distinguishes this species from both Herrera grammosticta Sanborn, 2020a (body length less than 18 mm in males and 20 mm in females) and Herrera nigropercula Sanborn 2020b (body length less than 14 mm). The markings are more reduced piceous and castaneous in Herrera grammosticta and there is piceous on the opercula and luteous patches on the anterior and posterior abdomen in Herrera nigropercula as well. The male genitalia are also unique in all species.
Distribution. The species is known only from Martinique (Sanborn 2017b).
