Description

Schizophyllan is a polysaccharide produced by Schizophyllum commune and it is a polysaccharide composed of Beta-glucan. Schizophyllan can be applied to supplement foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. It also has
anticancer and antioxidant activities. The objective of this study was to enhance the schizophyllan production of the S. commune strain MMCR256 within a 5L bioreactor. The seed culture of S. commune was inoculated into a 5L bioreactor. The growth medium was optimized using the Central Composite Design. The fermentation condition was set with a 10% (v/v) inoculum at 25°C, with initial impeller speed set at 300 rpm and aerated at 1 vvm. The fermentation broth was collected daily from day 0 to day 7. The results showed that the highest schizophyllan production was on day 6 at 6.62±0.09 g/L (with a biomass of 20.26±1.22 g/L) or 327 g/mg biomass. This study reveals key information for enhancing the schizophyllan production of S. commune within a bioreactor, thereby facilitating its utilization in various industrial applications.
