Citizen social science: Two case studies with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities

Since issues of inclusion and accessibility become increasingly prominent within the community of citizen science scholars and practitioners, the need to gain a deeper understanding of conducting research in collaboration with underrepresented individuals also becomes increasingly relevant. Hence, by adopting a qualitative approach based on a case study analysis, the present paper draws on citizen social science projects with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) communities in Greece and Hungary. Specifically, it aims to highlight (1) the intervention designs and tools used, as well as (2) the challenges faced and the strategies deployed by DHH trainers. By adopting a cross-country, comparative approach, the authors aim to raise awareness and expand research towards inclusive and socially-oriented citizen science.
