Description

The globalisation of capitalism has been at the center of the debates in the discipline of radical international political economy for at least 35 years. Today’s imperialism has many things in common with the classical imperialism that is perfectly theorised by classical theorists of imperialism. However there are important differences. Some authors have conceptualized these important differences under the banner of term globalization. Yet this study argues main dynamics of imperialism is still effective and the changes should be analyzed not as a break but as a transformation in the system of capitalist power relations. In order to deal with the difficulties in understanding the current form of imperialism, it is necessary to realize that the imperialist subject today is not a nation-state empire, but a collective agent with the capacity to use its power within various states at the same time, and that it no longer exports religion and writing, but democracy and human rights. Capitalism cannot simply be reduced to a sum of capitalist nation states, international organizations and companies currently operating worldwide. For this reason the study shall proceed by employing Marxist theories of state (in Althusserian fasion) and international political economy (mainly works of the first generation of the Regulation School) all together in order to enhance our way of understanding current –and bloody- state of world affairs.
