Spectroscopy of flares and superflares on AU Mic

Description

Flares and superflares are nowadays routinely detected from photometric space missions like
Kepler and TESS. However, spectroscopic characterization of flares, especially superflares, is
still quite rare. Here we report on a spectroscopic monitoring campaign targeting the young
active planet host star AU Mic. We observed this M dwarf during 56 partial nights with the ESO
1.52m telescope hosted by the PLATOSpec consortium. The telescope is equipped with the
Echelle spectrograph PUCHEROS+. By analyzing several prominent chromospheric spectral
lines, we detect 24 flares, for which we determine their durations, peak luminosities and
energies. Relationships between these flare parameters are investigated. Our data also include
the partial observation of a rare extreme event which already reached superflare energies in the
Halpha line emission alone.
