Finding T-Dwarf Companions to Gaia Primary Stars

Abstract:

Since their discovery 30 years ago, T-dwarfs have been an area of interest due to their low masses and cool atmospheres; but the properties of lone brown dwarfs are notoriously hard to determine. By finding T-dwarfs that are part of wide binary systems with Gaia-detected stars, we can infer characteristics like their age from the primary star, helping us calculate other properties and building a better picture of the physics of T-dwarfs. We have employed the VISTA Hemisphere Survey and DES DR2 to perform a deep search for T-dwarfs reaching down to J=20. In this search, we have found T-dwarfs with spectral types of T4-T9 and proper motions ranging from 50 mas/yr to 1 arcsecond/yr, including confirmed T-dwarf companions to white dwarfs. Recently obtained FourStar observations have allowed us to confirm more companion T-dwarfs, and we have also obtained FIRE spectra of some of our confirmed companions to further restrain the T-dwarf properties.
