Methods for an unbiased neutrino mass analysis with KATRIN

Description

The KATRIN experiment aims at measuring the effective electron antineutrino mass with a 0.2\,eV (90\%\,C.L.) sensitivity using the kinematics of tritium \textbeta-decay near the spectral endpoint. Previous experiments in Mainz and Troitsk based on this technique, which yielded an upper limit of 2\,eV (95\%\,C.L.), did not employ specific blinding methods. For KATRIN, we investigate several paths to implement an unbiased neutrino mass analysis. An important prerequisite is to avoid interference with near-term control of systematic effects whilst preventing observer's bias. Here, we discuss how different methods based on data or model blinding comply with these requirements
