Automating Safety, Industrialising Ethics; A critical lens on AI ethics solutions for research integrity
Description
The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has enabled an erosion of research integrity standards. For example, AI chatbots help papermills produce greater volumes of fake science, and raise questions about accountability for students, researchers and publishers. In this context, countless solutions have emerged for better AI governance. Many of these solutions come from those developing AI technologies – from entrepreneurs to big tech firms. Conversely, many solutions are being developed by third parties, forming a now buoyant industry of their own. What’s more, the solutions focus on different aspects of the harms AI tools may cause. At the one extreme, the focus is on the technical components of AI. At the other extreme, the focus is on the human components involved in ethics. This presentation offers a critical perspective on the many AI ethics solutions available to actors in the research ecosystem..
