Thrychogena brevifrons Rondani, 1856

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 65.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description, but later (Rondani 1859b: 87) added “ in agro parmensi, praesertim in montuosis [Parmese territory (Italy), above all on mountains]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (missing hind-legs) (MZUF: Box 11): Macquartia Desv. / brevifrons Rnd. / 537 / lectotype ♂ Thrychogena brevifrons Rondani, 1856, Cerretti and O’Hara des., 2013 / Loewia brevifrons (Rondani, 1856), Cerretti and O’Hara det., 2013.

PARALECTOTYPES EXAMINED: 4 ♀♀ (one covered with mold, thorax partially eaten by dermestids, missing fore- and left hind-legs; one covered with mold; one partially eaten by dermestids, missing left fore- and both mid-legs; one missing right fore-, left mid- and both hind-legs) (MZUF: Box 11): Macquartia Desv. / brevifrons Rnd. / 537 / paralectotype ♀ Thrychogena brevifrons Rondani, 1856, Cerretti and O’Hara des., 2013 / Loewia brevifrons (Rondani, 1856), Cerretti and O’Hara det., 2013); 1 ♀ (MZUF: Box E): Macquartia Desv. brevifrons Rnd., 205, ♀, Parma / 393 205.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Loewia brevifrons (Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 307, Pape et al. 1995: 26, Cerretti 2010: 342, O’Hara et al. 2020: 647).

REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 65) key for the genus Thrychogena Rondani, 1856 lists Thrychogena brevifrons as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. He later (Rondani 1859b: 86) provided specific characters for the male and female and moved the species to the genus Macquartia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830. Cerretti et al. (2014: 452) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (5 ♀♀) but did not mention an additional male and female in the MSNC and a male in the OUMNH (all are paralectotypes).
