Description

Master’s Thesis. International Master of the Arts Program in Cultural and Creative Industries, School of Culture Resources, Taipei National University of the Arts .

This research proposes and applies a methodology of formal analysis for art installations containing moving images. By using this methodology it is possible to identify the elements used in the installation, define their general characteristics within the piece, analyze their relationship including, artistic and non-artistic objects, and analyze the intended corporal and material effects. Following this method provides a set of qualitative tools to determine the degree of relevance of a large set of variables used in art installations, with an emphasis on their role in the construction of time and space as experienced by the visitor, and the materiality of the exhibition itself.

The methodology is applied to two related exhibitions by Taiwanese Artist Zhang Xu-Zhan, the art installation ‘Jungle, Jungle’, and a screening of the short film ‘Compound Eye of Tropical’.

The research finds that the methodology is a useful pedagogical tool for art students, curators, and artists as an introductory level of analysis for complex art installations.
