The Sound of Early Music: The Musical Production of Historically Informed Performance

Early music recordings have their own aesthetic standards, influenced by the timbral qualities of historical
instruments. Many of these instruments are reconstructions of originals, tailored to the preferences of performers
specialized in this genre. Traditional manuals on classical music recording techniques have seldom addressed the
specific recording methods for these instruments, and there appears to be no consensus on the production criteria
for such projects. This research is part of the DEePMusic project: Digitizing the Ecosystem of Musical Heritage,
led by the Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales (ICCMU), with participation from the Sound Laboratory
of Complutense University of Madrid - SonoLAB. Based on the analysis of three representative samples of the
work, the research aims to propose the appropriate production strategy for L'Incoronazzione di Poppea
(Monteverdi, 1643), identifying the characteristic features of what is known as Historically Informed Performance
(HIP).
