Interplay of Climate, Fishing, and Biodiversity: Risk Assessment in the Mediterranean Sea
Authors/Creators
Description
Marine ecosystems offer essential environmental and economic benefits but face growing threats from human activities and climate change. This poster presents a study that introduces a method to automatically identify high-risk areas in the Mediterranean Sea. It analyzes the complex interplay among environmental factors, fishing activities, species richness, and stock richness using data from 2017 to 2021, with projections up to 2050 under the RCP 8.5 scenario. Using big data and statistical analysis, high-risk hotspots were found where multiple stressors overlap, indicating severe risks to biodiversity, especially to fish stocks. Understanding these dynamics is vital for effective management. The study adopts an open-science approach and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles, enhancing transparency and facilitating informed decision-making for spatial planning and ecosystem modeling.
