LANGUAGE AND INTERTEXTUAL INTERPRETATION OF POETONYMS IN NOVEL «ULYSSES» BY J. JOYCE

The paper deals with a polygenetic analysis of the poetonyms in the novel “Ulysses” by J. Joyce. The relevance of the study is accounted for by the need to study the functional meaning of each onymic unit involved in the construction of the text. It should be pointed out that the language units addressed contribute to the ideological and artistic content of the entire novel. The principal method applied was system analysis, based on the relationship between the part and the whole in the text. The methods of comparative, componential and contextual analysis, as well as the descriptive method have been used, too. The study of poetonyms involves the consideration of linguistic techniques of creating proper names imagery, revealing the readers’ background knowledge in various spheres of culture, as well as explicating literary parallels with protonyms, implicitly or explicitly constituting the content structure of the proprietary lexemes in the novel “Ulysses”. The combination of these interpretation techniques makes it possible to establish the polysemantic essence of most poetonyms used in the novel, and phonetically, semantically, historically, etc. connected with the space of the text of Ulysses, as well as of the general text that includes the author’s works preceding Ulysses.
