Open Data Editor: The tormented journey of an app
Description
Do you remember the Frictionless Data desktop application we presented last year at csv, conf in Buenos Aires? We are back with a name (Open Data Editor) and a beta version. In this talk we will share the journey that has taken us from the alpha, presented last year at csv, conf, to the beta released in October 2023, and the current work-in-progress v1. During this journey the application development progressed, and even got a promising generative AI integration, but we also made mistakes. We want to talk about what we got wrong, the shifts in our initial plans, the ideas that didn't pan out as expected and the subsequent reconsiderations we've made. Errors are normal, but unfortunately they are not very often openly discussed. We think there is a lot to learn from them. We will therefore share our ODE journey: the mistakes, and how we addressed them, hoping it will be useful for the community.
