Description

GENUS Cuspicypris nom. nov.

2021 Hastacypris Filho, Fauth & Sames, 2021, p. 16, figs. 6.2A–D.

Type-species. Hastacypris adamantem Filho, Fauth & Sames, 2021 by original designation.

Etymology. The generic epithet refers to the latin cuspis, “tip”, in reference to the elongate outline and pointed posterior end in dorsal view.

Remarks on the homonymy. Hastacypris Croneis & Gutke, 1939 was erected for marine ostracods from the Lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) of the Renault Formation, USA. It is still used as an available valid genus name in Ostracoda. Subsequently, the genus name Hastacypris was also proposed by Filho et al. (2021) for non-marine ostracods from the Cretaceous (Hauterivian-Aptian) of the Iguatu Basin, Orós Formation, Brazil. Herein, I propose to replace the junior homonym Hastacypris Filho, Fauth & Sames, 2021 by the new substitutional name Cuspicypris (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature 1999, article 60.3).

Comparison with Hastacypris Croneis & Gutke, 1939. Cuspicypris nom. nov. differs from Hastacypris Croneis &

Gutke, 1939 by having a less elongated outline, a slightly more rounded posterior end, a more concave ventral border and a maximum length closer to mid-height.
