[Bradypus] ursinus Shaw 1791, Nat. Misc., 2: (unpaginated) pl. 58.

Type Locality: "Abinteriore Bengala"; restricted by Pocock (1941 a) as "Patna, north of the Ganges, Bengal" [India].

Vernacular Names: Sloth Bear.

Subspecies::

Subspecies Melursus ursinus subsp. ursinus Shaw 1791

Subspecies Melursus ursinus subsp. inornatus Pucheran 1855

Distribution: India (north to the Indian desert and to the foothills of the Himalayas), Sri Lanka.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: Synonyms allocated according to Pocock (1941 a).
