Type Locality: Papua New Guinea, Bismarck Arch., Duke of York Isl.

Vernacular Names: Island Tube-nosed Fruit Bat.

Subspecies Nyctimene major subsp. scitulus K. Andersen 1910

Distribution: D'Entrecasteaux Isls, Trobriand Isls, Bismarck and Louisiade Archs. (Papua New Guinea), Solomon Isls, and small islands off the north coast of New Guinea. A New Guinea mainland record is almost certainly erroneous; see Koopman (1979).

Conservation: IUCN / SSC Action Plan (1992) – Not Threatened. IUCN 2003 – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: cephalotes species group. Reviewed in part by Koopman (1979) and Hill (1983). See also Flannery (1995 b) and Bonaccorso (1998).
