Geomys arenarius Merriam 1895, N. Amer. Fauna, 8: 139.
Type Locality: USA, Texas, El Paso Co., El Paso.
Vernacular Names: Desert Pocket Gopher.
Subspecies::
Subspecies Geomys arenarius subsp. arenarius Merriam 1895
Subspecies Geomys arenarius subsp. brevirostris Hall 1932
Distribution: Extreme W Texas, SW and SC New Mexico (USA); N Chihuahua (Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lowered Risk (nt).
Discussion: Reviewed by Williams and Baker (1974, Mammalian Species No. 36) and Williams and Genoways (1978). Considered a subspecies of bursarius by Hafner and Geluso (1983); phylogenetic separation of arenarius and bursarius established by Jolley et al. (2000).
