Trachypithecus (Kasi) vetulus (Erxleben 1777)

Cercopithecus vetulus Erxleben 1777, Systema Regni Animalis: 24.

Type Locality: Sri Lanka, Hill country of South.

Vernacular Names: Purple-faced Langur.

Synonyms: Trachypithecus (Kasi) albinus (Kelaart 1851); Trachypithecus (Kasi) senex (Erxleben 1777).

Subspecies::

Subspecies Trachypithecus (Kasi) vetulus subsp. vetulus Erxleben 1777

Subspecies Trachypithecus (Kasi) vetulus subsp. monticola Kelaart 1850

Subspecies Trachypithecus (Kasi) vetulus subsp. nestor Bennett 1833

Subspecies Trachypithecus (Kasi) vetulus subsp. philbricki Phillips 1927

Distribution: Sri Lanka.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; U.S. ESA – Threatened as Presbytis senex; IUCN – Endangered as T. v. vetulus, T. v. monticola, T. v. nestor, and T. v. philbricki.

Discussion: T. vetulus species group. Type of subgenus Kasi; see Szalay and Delson (1979:402). On the use of vetulus, instead of the previously more commonly used senex, for the species, see Napier (1985:72).
