Callithrix (Callithrix) jacchus (Linnaeus 1758)

[Simia] jacchus Linnaeus 1758, Syst. Nat., 10th ed., Vol. 1: 27.

Type Locality: Brazil, Pernambuco.

Vernacular Names: Common Marmoset.

Synonyms: Callithrix (Callithrix) albicollis Spix 1823; Callithrix (Callithrix) communis (South 1845); Callithrix (Callithrix) hapale (Gray 1870); Callithrix (Callithrix) leucotis (Lesson 1840); Callithrix (Callithrix) moschatus (Kerr 1792); Callithrix (Callithrix) rufus Fischer 1829; Callithrix (Callithrix) vulgaris Humboldt 1812.

Distribution: Brazilian coast: Piauí, Ceará, and Pernambuco Provinces.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Least Concern.

Discussion: Subgenus Callithrix. Includes aurita, flaviceps, geoffroyi, and penicillata according to Hershkovitz (1977:489-527), but refuted by Mittermeier et al. (1988) who recognized all of these species.
