Lagomorpha Brandt 1855

Description

Lagomorpha Brandt 1855

Synonyms: Duplicidentata Illiger 1811; Leporida Averianov 1999; Neolagomorpha Averianov 1999; Ochotonida Averianov 1999; Palarodentia Haeckel 1895.

Families: 3 families with 13 genera and 92 species:

Family Ochotonidae Thomas 1896 (1 genus with 30 species and 52 subspecies)

Family Prolagidae Gureev 1964 (1 genus with 1 species)

Family Leporidae Fischer 1817 (11 genera with 61 species and 186 subspecies)

Discussion: Relationships between this order and Rodentia have been disputed for over a century. Its early history was discussed by Simpson (1945), while Landry (1999) provided an overview of more recent literature on the subject, discussing many synapomorphies, mostly morphological, that support the concept of a Cohort Glires including both orders. Molecular sequence data also support the concept (Huchon et al., 1999).
