Kogia sima Owen 1866
Kogia sima Owen 1866, Trans. Zool. Soc. Lond., 6 (1): 30.
Type Locality: India, Andhra Pradesh (= Madras Presidency), "taken at Waltair".
Vernacular Names: Dwarf Sperm Whale.
Distribution: Worldwide: warm-temperate to tropical waters, occasionally strands in cold-temperate areas.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Reviewed by Nagorsen (1985, Mammalian Species, 239) and Caldwell and Caldwell (1989). The specific name simus. -a, -um is a Latin adjectival form and has to agree in gender with the generic name Kogia (Rice, 1998:84).
