Description

Stenella coeruleoalba (Meyen 1833)

[Delphinus] coeruleoalbus Meyen 1833, Nova Acta Acad. Caes. Nat. Curios., 16 (2): 609.

Type Locality: "an der östlichen Küste von Südamerika; wir karpunirten ihn in der Gegend des Rio de la Plata." (= South Atlantic Ocean near Rio de la Plata, off coast of Argentina and Uruguay).

Vernacular Names: Striped Dolphin.

Synonyms: Stenella asthenops (Cope 1865); Stenella crotaphiscus (Cope 1865); Stenella euphrosyne (Gray 1846); Stenella styx (Gray 1846); Stenella tethyos (Gervais 1853).

Distribution: Worldwide: cold-temperate to tropical waters.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (cd).

Discussion: See Mitchell (1970:720). Perrin et al. (1981, 1987) gave a revised synonymy of this species.
