Pipistrellus (Pipistrellus) deserti Thomas 1902, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1902 (II): 4.

Type Locality: Libya, Fezzan, Murzuk.

Vernacular Names: Desert Pipistrelle.

Synonyms: Pipistrellus (Pipistrellus) aegyptius J. Fischer 1829.

Distribution: Egypt, N Sudan, Libya, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana.

Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc) as P. aegyptius.

Discussion: Subgenus Pipistrellus. Qumsiyeh (1985) proposed use of aegyptius for this species and many subsequent authors followed this usage, but see Kock (1999 b), who showed aegyptius to be a nomen dubium. Reviewed by Horácek et al. (2000).
