Tonatia bidens (Spix 1823)

[Vampyrus] bidens Spix 1823, Sim. Vespert. Brasil.: 65.

Type Locality: Brazil, Bahia, Rio Sao Francisco.

Vernacular Names: Greater Round-eared Bat.

Synonyms: Tonatia childreni Gray 1838.

Distribution: NE Brazil to N Argentina and Paraguay.

Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Most material previously referred to bidens from Central America and northern South America is now recognized as saurophila; see Williams et al. (1995).
