Embracing Diversity in Autism Care: Beyond ABA to Meet the Rising Needs

 

Medicare’s existing frameworks, centered around ABA, are increasingly seen as insufficient. The review advocates for the inclusion of a variety of interventions, highlighting structured physical activities, Qigong, Tai Chi (Panerai et al., 2002; Rodrigues et al., 2019; Sarabzadeh et al., 2019), and DIR Floortime. This latter approach, which emphasizes developmental and individual differences in relational therapy, encourages communication through play. Studies suggest that interventions like DIR Floortime significantly bolster emotional and social development in children with ASD (Solomon et al., 2021). State and federal legislative initiatives have prompted broader insurance coverage, consequently facilitating earlier diagnoses and more accessible treatments (National Council on Disability, 2020; Kogan M., 2020).

Particular attention has been given to the therapeutic benefits of Qigong and Tai Chi, traditional Chinese practices that combine physical exercise with mental focus and controlled breathing. Studies highlight that Qigong therapy, particularly Qigong massage, has led to significant improvements in sensory functions and behavioral self-regulation, reducing the overall severity of ASD symptoms. Notably, children receiving Qigong massage showed a reduction in tactile sensitivity and an increase in social skills and behavioral control, contributing to a decrease in ASD severity by up to 44% over two years, with about one in four children having sensory issues fall into normal classification after two years of treatment (J.M. Rodrigues et al., 2019).
