Enhancing Construction Management: Multi-View Stereo and BIM Integration for Construction Progress Monitoring

The monitoring of construction project progress is crucial in construction management, ensuring projects stay on track and resources are efficiently utilized. Building Information Modeling (BIM) facilitates the creation of intricate, information-rich models of building designs, enabling a comparative analysis between the as-built building and the as-planned BIM model for effective construction site monitoring. Despite its advantages, integrating the as-planned BIM model with real-time on-site developments during construction remains a challenge. To address this challenge, our research conducted a comprehensive study involving the collection of images during both daytime and nighttime from strategically positioned fixed camera viewpoints across an actual construction site. We employed the Structure-from-Motion method to estimate camera poses and utilized classical Multi-View Stereo technique to reconstruct a 3D point cloud of the as-built building. Subsequently, we achieved the alignment of the reconstructed 3D model with the as-planned BIM model using point cloud registration techniques, including coarse and fine registration. In addition, we integrated the positions of construction workers within the BIM model, projecting them from the 2D image plane to 3D space using voxel carving method, enabling precise safety checks to ensure worker well-being in the dynamic construction environment. This method promises to advance real-time construction monitoring by providing a cohesive link between planned models and actual constructions, essential for enhancing construction management practices.
